Humility during the Holidays

As we find ourselves in the midst of the chaos of the holiday season that is upon us, it's good to take a step back and reflect.

Are we caught up in the "what I want" mentality of the season? Or are we looking for ways to serve others with a joyful heart?

Christmas Ornaments by goose, on Pix-O-Sphere

Philippians 2 reminds us that we are to have an attitude of humility, even during the holidays. Are we being Christ to those around us in the store? Or are we too worried about making sure that "perfect" gift ends up in our cart?
Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus... {Philippians 2.3-5, NASB}
In this passage, Paul exhorts his readers to have "humility of mind" (verse 3) and to "regard one another as more important than yourselves" (verse 3). Are we viewing the person in line in front of us with 100+ items as more important than ourselves? Or are we impatient, complaining internally that they are taking too long?

Are we more worried about our own Christmas lists than we are about the Christmas lists of those less fortunate than ourselves?

The King's Christmas ListMy kids and I re-read The King's Christmas List yesterday, and I was once again struck by the end of the book:
Anyone who desires to give Me a gift, behold!
Give food to the hungry and clothes to the cold,
Give care to the poor, both young and old,
Whatever gift you've given to a person in need,
Is indeed a gift you have given to Me.

What gifts are you giving to the King this year on His birthday?
 How are you focusing on humility during the holidays?

Home for the Holidays

We've started a tradition in our family to celebrate Jesus' birthday each Christmas with a birthday party the Wednesday night before Christmas (this is a continuation from when I was a child). I want our family to do something more this year - to give a gift worthy of the Recipient.

I want my children to grow up with an attitude of humility, even during the holidays.

HomefortheHolidays by ashleypichea, on Pix-O-SphereWe will be collecting loose change and larger donations throughout the month for a homeless shelter our church is helping to start here in our town. We want to provide a place of warmth for those less fortunate than ourselves. If you'd like to join us in this effort, you can click on the "Donate" cup at the very bottom of the blog.

100% of all donations received in December will be given towards the start-up costs for this shelter.

Win 50 Christmas Photo Cards from @DaySpringCards!!

A few weeks ago, I was VERY excited when the FedEx truck pulled up to our house. The package it brought contained our CHRISTMAS CARDS!!

In the past, I've often created our own Christmas picture cards, using my basic graphic design skills and then either mailing them (if I had time) or emailing them (if I was lazy) to all of our family and friends.

This year, I decided to try out StudioDaySpring.com. I was able to make our Christmas photo cards with a few quick clicks, personalizing them to fit our family. Then, all I had to do was wait for FedEx to deliver them!

They are all ready to stuff into envelope and mail to our family and friends.

The folks at StudioDaySpring.com were SO generous, not only to provide me with 50 flat cards for free, but they are going to give one of you 50 flat (or 25 folded) cards, too!

Here's how to enter {be sure to leave a separate comment for each task you complete}:

God Loves Single Moms, by Teresa Whitehurst

Are you a single mom? Did you know that God loves you?

God Loves Single Moms: Practical Help for Finding Confidence, Strength, and HopeTeresa Whitehurst has written a book full of practical help for finding confidence, strength, and hope as you raise your children on your own.

{From the Back Cover:}

Teresa Whitehurst knows what it's like to be a single mom. She faced many challenging times when money was short, when her back was aching, and when her spirits sagged from trying to "do it all" without letting anyone know she needed a little rest or assistance. Over the years she learned that both she and her children benefited when she stopped trying to be perfect; admitted her needs, frustration, loneliness, or fatigue; and reached out to God and to supportive family and friends.

In God Loves Single Moms, she offers you down-to-earth advice on navigating the world of single motherhood with confidence and hope for the future. Packed with practical tips, smart strategies, and ways to improve your family's well-being, this book tackles your most pressing issues, like self-care, developing a support network, organization, finances, discipline, and more.

It can feel like you're struggling through life on your own. But you have a partner who wants you to succeed and wants your children to flourish. God loves you and wants to guide and support you every step of the way. Whether you've never been married, you're divorced, or you've been widowed, you and your children deserve the best life has to offer. And while you may get weary, you need never feel alone.

{My Thoughts:}

All moms can benefit from the practical advice and tips that the author gives in this quick and easy read. Single moms, especially, though, need to know that they are not alone, and the author speaks from personal experience when she shares the guidance that got her through the difficult times.

I pray that this book would bless your life as you read it, drawing you closer to God. I'd love to hear from you after you read it - I'd love to know how it impacted your life!

Thanks to Revell, a division of Baker, for providing this book for review.

Bethany House Book Reviews

The Strategically Small Church

Strategically Small Church, The: Intimate, Nimble, Authentic, and EffectiveStrategically Small Church, The: Intimate, Nimble, Authentic, and Effective by Brandon J. O'Brien

{From the Back Cover:}

Our culture's infatuation with bigness - bigger cars, bigger house, bigger businesses - has infiltrated the church. But smaller doesn't equal second rate. Leadership Journal editor and former pastor Brandon O'Brien shows how small churches are uniquely equipped for success in today's culture.

O'Brien celebrates churches that are taken full advantage of their small size and analyzes how other churches can learn from their strategies. For example, strategically small churches:
  • facilitate a higher level of commitment from laypeople
  • focus attention on fewer programs, increasing effectiveness
  • nurture close relationships across age and life-experience barriers
But perhaps most important, O'Brien ask churches to rethink what it means to be success. Sometimes small is just right.

{My Thoughts:}

As a layleader in my own small church, I was very interested to read this book to determine what I might be able to apply to our church. I am definitely a pro-small church advocate, especially in terms of relationships and discipleship, and I appreciated the author's boldness to advocate the same.

Somewhere to Belong

Somewhere to Belong (Daughters of Amana, Book 1)Somewhere to Belong (Daughters of Amana, Book 1) by Judith Miller

{From the Back Cover:}

Johanna Ilg has lived her entire life in Main Amana, one of the seven villages settled by devout Christians who believe in cooperative living, a simple lifestyle, and faithful service to God. Although she's always longed to see the outside world, Johanna believes her future is rooted in Amana. But when she learns a troubling secret, the world she thought she knew is shattered. Is this truly where she belongs?

Berta Schumacher has lived a privileged life in Chicago, so when her parents decide they want a simpler life in Amana, Iowa, she resists. Under the strictures of the Amana villages, her rebellion reaches new heights. Will her heart ever be content among the plain people of Amana?

{My Thoughts:}

Set in 1877, this story of two young women, as different as can be, will introduce you to a different way of life. Oh, to live in simpler days, and yet...

I have enjoyed reading many Judith Miller books over the past couple of years {including A Surrendered Heart & The Carousel Painter}, and she never fails to please. I look forward to reading the future books in this Daughters of Amana series.

Homosexuality and the Christian

Homosexuality and the Christian: A Guide for Parents, Pastors, and FriendsHomosexuality and the Christian: A Guide for Parents, Pastors, and Friends by Mark A. Yarhouse, PsyD

{From the Back Cover:}

Homosexuality is one of the most controversial topics of our day, and we all need clear, biblical answers that are grounded in love and compassion. As a Christian and a leading expert in the field of sexual identity, Mark Yarhouse provides honest, accurate information about hot-button questions like:
  • What causes homosexuality and same-sex attraction?
  • Can attractions or orientation be changed?
  • What is "sexual identity" and why does it matter?
  • What should I do when a friend opens up to me about his or his homosexual attractions?
Always keeping in mind the real, hurting people - Christians and nonbelievers alike - who are struggling with the issue, Dr. Yarhouse provides a balanced and accessible look at today's research. He also introduces a new way to think about the topic, carefully separating "same-sex attraction" from a "gay identity." This book provides a much-needed, deeper understanding of homosexuality that will help our churches, our communities, and our families speak the truth in love.

{My Thoughts:}

I picked this book up because homosexuality is one of those topics that the church is almost too afraid to address, other than to say it's "bad". The problem is that the people struggling with this sin {hey, I'm a sinner, too - I just struggle with different sin issues} are often "shunned" by the church rather than loved by the church.

Are these sinners not the same as the sinners who Jesus came to minister to? The tax collectors, the prostitutes, the downtrodden of society? Why are we running away from them?

This book answers some of the "tough" questions with grace. This is a great resource for anyone who knows somebody struggling with this sin issue.

Thanks to Bethany House for providing me with copies of these books for review.

Caffeinated Conversations {11.26.10}

Did you all enjoy your Thanksgiving??

I'm still in the midst of mine - spending a long weekend with family and friends.

---

Today's Caffeinated Conversation is about convictions.

This topic has come out of my time at the Relevant Conference as well as my conversations recently with a number of the attendees of this year's conference, but it's extremely applicable to all of us trying to live the Christian life.

(Video embedded in post - click here if you don't see it.)

I'd love to hear your thoughts about this topic:
  • Have you ever found yourself under conviction that wasn't from God?
  • How are intentional about avoiding the tendency to put your convictions on others?
  • What verses do you claim to remind yourself that you are free?

31 Days to Build a Better Blog - Challenge Link-up, Week Five

We pause for a short interruption to our regular programming...

31DBBBAs I mentioned, I'm currently hosting and participating in a blogging challenge - 31 Days to Build a Better Blog. (There's still time to join in - we end December 3rd.) Participants are encouraged to report on each day's tasks in the AP Freewriting BlogFrog community, and each Thursday during the challenge, those participating will have an opportunity to link up their #31DBBB posts for the week on this blog.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As many of you may remember, I'm currently taking an independent study class this semester on blogging - Blogging as a Ministry. One of the assignments for this class is to read the 31 Days to Build a Better Blog ebook and to journal at least 100 words per chapter/day.

---

This is actually a link up of last week's task and this week's task since I was such a slacker last week!!

---

Day 16: Solve a Problem

There are a lot of different problems that I could solve. In fact, I’m often known as a problem solver on Twitter and Facebook. However, due to the nature of my blog, I’m not sure what being a problem solver looks like. Darren suggested making a list of everything I’ve “learnt, overcome, discovered or solved.” In reality, this is what my blog is about. I basically share what God is doing in my life – what I have learned and discovered in my study of the Word, and how that has helped me to overcome sin in my life. But how does this solve a problem for my readers? If they are struggling with a similar issue, it can give them encouragement and suggestions about what their next step is., but there’s not an easy “10 Steps to Overcome Sin” that I can post. It’s different for each of us.

---

Day 17: First-Time Reader

I didn’t have the opportunity to watch a first-time reader use my blog, but I pulled up my Google Analytics site overlay to see what people were clicking on the most. I found out that since I made the change from the blogspot.com domain to my own domain, I was no longer able to track the individual clicks that were being made on my site. I was still able to determine the number of hits on various posts and my referrers and such, but the actual site overlay would load. I need to decide if I want to start a new Google Analytic on my blog now or wait until I move to WP (hopefully this spring) before starting the new analytic.

---

Day 18: Create a Sneeze Page for Your Blog

Sneeze pages look to me to be very similar to what I do at the end of each month with my monthly recap Top 10 posts – taking the “hot” posts from the month and showcasing them all at once. I also did this for awhile with weekly recap posts, especially for my Friday only readers. I need to figure out a way to create appropriate sneeze pages for posts in my archives, giving them “new life” by bringing them back in focus. I think a “devotions” sneeze page might be appropriate – creating a devotional calendar of sorts from devotional-eque posts I’ve written.

---

Day 19: Write an Opinion Post

I do a lot of reviews on my blog, so writing an “opinion” post isn’t that new of a task for me. But, as I was reading about this task in the book, I was prompted to share my opinion about a “hot topic” that has needed to be addressed within the greater Christian blogging community. I took a few minutes to sit and record a vlog for my upcoming Caffeinated Conversations post. I share something that needed to be shared, even though I know the potential for negative feedback is there. It may even make some people mad, but it’s God’s truth, and the truth hurts if you’re not willing to look it in the face sometimes. I’m praying that my “opinion” post will be received with grace, as it was recorded, and that God will use to encourage women.

---

Day 20: Leave Comments on Other Blogs

I’m a firm believer that leaving comments generates more traffic, especially a quality comment. In fact, I’ve written a few posts about building community and conversation through the use of comments. But Darren’s 11 Tips for Getting Your Comment Noticed on a Popular Blog was a bit eye-opening to me. Sure, I understood the need to leave a comment that was more than “nice site,” but I hadn’t thought about a number of the other suggestions he included. I plan to utilize this list in my commenting over the next few months to build up readership and “expertise” in my niche. I want to start devoting “x” number of minutes each day/week to reading and commenting on other blogs, building relationships and getting inspired.

---

Day 21: Breathe Life into an Old Post

Reading about this task, I wasn’t sure how I wanted to tackle it. Did I want to pick an old post and “revamp” it, only to leave it hiding in the archives? Did I want to dig through my archives to find a “good” post and rewrite it completely (as a new post) and then link back? Honestly, when I got to the end of the reading, I was relieved to find that I wasn’t the only one who didn’t like the idea of “sprucing up” my older posts – that wanted a record, of sort, about where’d I been and where I’m heading. All that to say, I would like to be able to refer my readers to older posts without worrying about the look/feel not being “up to par” with the current material. Perhaps when I move to WP, I won’t move everything with me – only the quality posts or posts that have brought in traffic.

Also, I really enjoyed reading a few articles that Darren linked to in the reading. The post about adding depth gave me some really good food-for-thought, and it linked to another post that I’ll come back to about giving your readers an assignment. Maybe this is where I’m headed with my blog – down a “teaching” road.

---

Day 22: Pay Special Attention to a Reader

As a rule of thumb, I connect with each reader who connects with me in a “personal” way by emailing a response to any comments I get. However, I would like to develop a way to show “reader appreciation” on a regular basis for all my readers to see, and thus encourage greater reader participation and interaction.

A few ideas that I’m playing with are:
  1. Doing a “Featured Reader” post every week or so, highlighting a regular commenter.
  2. Having a blog/twitter/facebook link-up party.
  3. Contacting readers who leave quality comments and/or write quality blogs that I read regularly about guest posting.

I want to build up the community, and I want each reader to feel important. I also want to find ways to encourage greater interaction with my posts and the other readers. I want to create a community, not just a soapbox for me to stand on.

---

Day 23: Call Your Readers to Action

The majority of my readers are quite passive. I often include “calls to action” within my posts, yet only a small number of my readers faithfully act on what I ask of them. I need to find ways not only to build readership, but also to bring the readers out of the woodwork, so to speak. I need to turn my passive readers into active readers.

One of the things I’d like to see is a greater number of email subscribers. I’d like to start a weekly or monthly newsletter, but I need to build a bigger database of email addresses than what I currently have now. I need to work on seamlessly incorporate a call to action to subscribe via email within my post content. Simply having my connection buttons on my blog isn’t enough – the most passive of readers won’t ever click them. I need to find a way to encourage connection through my writing.

---

Day 24: How to Use a Magazine to Improve Your Blog

The only magazines I have sitting around are Parenting and all you. So, I went online to see if I could find any Christian magazines that might be more applicable to my niche. I discovered Kyria, and I spent some time browsing their online site, trying to learn more about the magazine and how to be an active member of their community of influential Christian women. I’ll be back there often in the next few months, especially leaving comments on their blogs.

I decided to go ahead and use the December edition of Parents to do the actual assignment, and my brain picked up a few ideas.
  • First, there are pictures everywhere – I need to start taking quality photos and using them in my blog posts.
  • Secondly, the use of colors and fonts make their heading (and subheadings) really pop and catch the reader’s attention. I need to rethink how I’m using headings and reconfigure my headings to work for me.
  • The obvious “numbered posts work well” went a step further – not only did they publish lists, but they made them aesthetically pleasing.
  • One of the key elements I noticed was that the advertising almost blended in so well that you didn’t realize that it was an ad – it seemed like another page of the same text. This is something I want to do better with on my blog.
  • I also liked the use of pop-out quote boxes {give %, quote from the article, twitter chatter on the topic, Q&A on the topic, etc.} – it drew the reader’s attention to the smaller article text by hooking them with the larger graphic.
  • Another feature I noticed and liked was the ability to “take it with you” – an article that had cutout recipe cards. I want to find ways to encourage my readers to share my content offline as well as online.
  • There were also a few layout ideas that I thought might be able to add a bit of spice to my blog – something to make it unique and intriguing.
Lots of great ideas, overall, and definitely an exercise I’ll want to go back to again.
---

Day 25: Ask a Question

In an attempt to invite more comments, I’ve started asking questions at the end of each post – my way of attempting to draw the readers into conversation about the topic I’ve just discussed. While I do have a few readers that will faithfully comment, I find that most of them stay hidden in the woodwork. I find that I almost have a better response on Twitter when I promote my post with the question, getting feedback from Twitter followers directly, than I do on my actual blog. I want to incorporate the idea of an “assignment” in with this idea of a question – giving my readers something to do and something to think about. Maybe my questions are too “rhetorical” and not “practical” enough.

Day 26: Improve Another Blog

I have had the privilege of directly influencing another blogger’s blog on a few occasions now. One blogger in specific has come to me with design questions, brainstorming needs, and for other blogging advice. I love to be able to help others out with their blogging questions and concerns.

Just today, I noticed a typo on a fairly static page on a blog I was visiting, so I let the blogger know about the typo. Other times, I’ve received auto-response emails in error, and I’ve let the blogger know that they had auto-response on when they didn’t intend. It’s the little things like these that not only build up the other blogger but that create trusting relationships between bloggers that can lead to positive results for my blog down the road.

Picking up the pieces...

A few weeks ago, I "hit bottom" with all my responsibilities and lack of time-management discipline. Since I'm working on having better time-management discipline this week, I'll be MIA online for most of it, so I thought I'd share a few posts I draft-wrote when I "hit bottom."

{Hitting Bottom - Part One}

---------------------

Hitting Bottom - Part Two

As I posted yesterday, I have a LOT on my plate. But, my number one priority (after my relationship with God) OUGHT to be my family - my husband and my kids. As a stay-at-home mom/spouse, I OUGHT to have more than enough time to care for their needs, as well as bless them, on a daily basis. They OUGHT to be the focus of my day. However, I have to tell you - this isn't the case most days. If anything, they tend to be an afterthought - at the bottom of my "to-do" list.

I find myself so focused on my goals for my online ministry that I forget that my primary ministry during this season of my life IS my family.

Specifically, I have two young children (2yo and 3.5yo) who need Mommy to be building into their lives. Also, since my husband works outside the home, I need to make our home a haven for him - somewhere he can retreat to each night in peace.

There needs to be a redirection and reorganization of my priorities. My "to-do" list needs to be reversed, putting my husband's and children's needs at the TOP, rather than the BOTTOM.

My ministry outside of my home should NEVER come
BEFORE my family, since during this season of my life,
God has called me to minister primarily TO my family.

Remembering my present calling is key to keeping my priorities properly balanced.

---

Do you need to re-order and re-direct your priorities? What can I do to encourage you to focus on the calling God has given you during this season of your life?

The plates are falling all around...

A few weeks ago, I "hit bottom" with all my responsibilities and lack of time-management discipline. Since I'm working on having better time-management discipline this week, I'll be MIA online for most of it, so I thought I'd share a few posts I draft-wrote when I "hit bottom."

---------------------

Hitting Bottom - Part One

At the present moment, I am juggling WAY too many plates. They are literally in danger of all crashing to the floor at any moment. Between a double-load (actually more like triple-load) of classes this session, my online "ministry" commitments, church commitments, family responsibilities, and everything else, I need some serious time-management discipline to keep it all balanced - I don't have it right now.

Yesterday, I found myself at the point of mental exhaustion, ready to "call it quits" on the majority of the commitments I have at the moment. I became completely overwhelmed, and my kids were starting to feel the impact. I could feel myself going into breakdown mode. I had to stop, leave it all hanging in mid-air, and go to God.

Just as Jesus needed times of solitude with God {Mark 1.35}, so do I.

Bible by terilynneu, on Pix-O-Sphere

When I feel myself becoming exhausted - mentally, physically, or otherwise - I can easily find myself at a point of breaking down and causing damage to myself and/or others. It's at times like these that I have to step back, take it before God, and ask Him to guide me. If there are commitments He wants me to let go of, I need Him to show me. If He wants me to continue with all of it, I need Him to help me balance it all...

Encouragement to this Mommy's Heart

Jenny is my three-and-a-half year old, and today, we had a short conversation that just encouraged my heart.
"Mommy, can I have a question?"
"Sure. What's your question?"
"I told you after Caillou it is lunch time!"
"That's not a question."
"Oh. Is that a demand?"
"Yes."
"And I'm not supposed to demand, am I?"
"Nope."
"Okay."

She's getting it! She's really getting it! We've been working hard with her to teach her to talk more kindly, asking for things, rather than demanding them. (Mommy needs to work on this too - I have a feeling I know where she picked up the bad habit.)

It was so great and so encouraging to hear her acknowledge the difference without any prompting from me!

How have you found encouragement in the "little things" this week?

Getting Dressed Works for Me {11.17.10}

I did it. I got dressed EVERY day this week! I didn't get quite as gussied up as I had been trying to do in weeks past, as some days this week it was just an accomplishment to get out of my pjs, but I did manage to get dressed each day.

Thanks for the accountability in getting dressed each day, setting the tone for productivity in my home, and seeking to make myself more attractive (inside and out) for my husband!

{Here are my caveats for this weekly What I Wore Wednesday series.}

 (As you can probably see, by the "end" of the week, I was in sweats.)

Top 10 Tuesday: Revisiting Relevant {2}

Life has been SO busy lately, that I haven't really had a whole lot of time to recap my Relevant experience or connect online with all the great ladies I met at Relevant. I'm working through my stack of blog/business cards, highlighting some of the fun gals I met at Relevant. Be sure to check out their blogs and leave them some comment love!
  1. Ashley from Putting God First Place has been an online friend since I first heard about the Relevant conference. We both frequented the Relevant hashtag on Twitter, so I was super excited to be able to meet her at Relevant.
  2. Joy is a blogger that I was also excited to meet at Relevant. She writes at Joy in This Journey, choosing joy in the midst of all of the trials of life she has had to walk through.
  3. Michelle lives in my backyard. Not really, but it was our joke all weekend at Relevant. We live less than two hours apart, so she's definitely one of the closest Relevant attendees to me. She writes at MichellePendergrass.com and is an amazing author!
  4. Gussy (aka Maggie) doesn't know it, but I secretly stalked her all weekend. Not really, but she is amazingly talented, and I {love} her craftiness! I'm actually pretty jealous of all the cool stuff she gets to make... I need to get some of her cuteness for myself!
  5. Debbie from Happy Clippings had a constant smile on her face. I still remember her as "the happy one"! She writes a "small-town blog" but promises "big-time savings".
  6. Sara is another crafty lady whose amazing talent I envy. She blogs at Happy Brown House - a beautiful hodge-podge of a beautiful life.
  7. Dawn is another online friend that I was able to make a "face-to-face friend" at Relevant. She writes at 5 Kids and Dog - writing about kids, homeschooling, special needs, and a serious addiction to technology. She is also co-founder of Marketplace Mommies, a blog I've been privileged to guest post for in the past.
  8. Stephanie has been a great online friend for a few months now. I was so excited for the chance to meet her in person! She writes at Bowmania - unwrapping God's gifts one day at a time.
  9. Ashley from Our Daily Chocolate is another one of those super talent crafty gals. I have enjoyed getting to know her online over the past several months, so I was SO excited to hear mid-travel to Harrisburg that she had won a last minute ticket - what a privilege to get to meet her!
  10. The first night at dinner, I was privileged to sit next to Andrea from The Flourishing Mother. I truly enjoyed getting to know her as we shared a meal together.

Be sure to say "hi" to these amazing ladies for me today!

Real Food Giveaway...

A few months ago, I was privileged to have the opportunity to guest post on Modern Alternative Mama's blog. Through this opportunity, I had the privilege of building a relationship with ModernAMama...

...and that relationship has dividends for YOU today! ModernAMama has gracious allowed me to giveaway a copy of her new real food basics cookbook, In the Kitchen, to one of you!

I'm still quite new, personally, to the idea of real food, but I'm definitely interested in learning more! Reading the introduction to In the Kitchen was a real eye-opener for me in terms of the food I eat and make for my family. This small snippet of overview was enough to catch my attention, changing the way I view food, and hopefully changing the way I eat food in the near future (once I have time to learn more and research how to go about doing it).

My favorite thing, though, about this cookbook is the fact that the recipes in it are so basic and recognizable! Most of the recipes shared (i.e. fried chicken, tomato sauce, french fries, pizza dough, etc.) are made with ingredients I already have on hand - just in a healthier fashion and combination.

If you're interested in learning more about real food cooking, ModernAMama was gracious enough to give me a special coupon code to share with you that is good through 11/22.

Use the coupon code: "AP25" to save 25% the already incredible price of $6.95!!

Also, I will be giving away a copy of this cookbook, thanks to ModernAlternativeMama. Here's how to enter. (Each task is a separate entry - complete as many as you'd like and leave a comment for each task you complete or already have already done.):
  • Leave me a comment letting me know what you think about real food - are you already eating real food? are you interested in real food?
  • Follow me on Twitter
  • Follow ModernAMama on Twitter
  • "Like" AP Freewriting on Facebook
  • Subscribe to AP Freewriting via Email or RSS
  • Tweet or share on Facebook about this giveaway: "Win a copy of @ModernAMama's In the Kitchen - Real Food Basics cookbook via @apichea #giveaway http://bit.ly/9z28wM"
Comments will close on 11/18/10 and winner will be drawn at random and notified by email.

Hunter's Moon, by Don Hoesel

Hunter's MoonDon Hoesel, author of Elisha's Bones, strikes again with another thrilling suspense drama in Hunter's Moon. Slow in it's story line development, the characters and plot make up for the lack of speed.

From the back cover: Every family has secrets. Few will go as far as the Baxters to keep them.

Bestselling novelist CJ Baxter has made a career out of writing hard-hitting stories ripped from his own life. Still, there's one story from his past he's never told. One secret that's remained buried for decades.

Now, seventeen years after swearing he'd never return, CJ is headed back to Adelia, NY. His life in Tennessee has fallen to pieces, his grandfather is dying, and CJ can no longer run from the past.

With Graham Baxter, CJ's brother, running for Senate, a black sheep digging up old family secrets is the last thing the family and campaign can afford. CJ soon discovers that blood may be thicker than water, but it's not match for power and money.

There are wounds even time cannot heal.

If you're a fan of suspense drama, you will definitely want to add Hunter's Moon to your holiday wish list!

From the back cover: During New York City's Gilded Age... The GAME is played amid banquets and balls. The PRIZE is a lifetime of wealth and privilege. The RULES will test friendships and the desires of a young woman's heart. Clara Carter is the social season's brightest star... but at what cost?

Hearts Awakening, by Delia Parr

Hearts AwakeningHearts Awakening is the story of a plain spinster and her less than likely encounter with love. Based from an island in the Susquehanna River, Hearts Awakening introduces the reader to a beautiful story in a beautiful setting.

From the back cover:

Two people in desperate circumstances. One unlikely proposal.

Life has left few choices for Elvira Kilmer. Her hopes for marriage and a family of her own have long since passed her by, and her arrival on Dillon's Island, nestled in the Susquehanna River, is not of her choosing, either. She needs work. And Jackson Smith needs a housekeeper.

Yet Ellie never imagined the widower would be so young... so handsome.

Jackson, on the other hand, has never met anyone quite so... plain. But he quickly comes to realize that Ellie's presence may solve his own problems - both the rearing of his young boys and the scandal that surrounds his first marriage.

When Jackson offers her something quite out of the ordinary, will Ellie look beyond mere necessity and risk opening her heart?

Be sure to add this story of learned love to your holiday wish list!

Partial transcript:
Blogging isn't the issue... Blogging actually makes me a better mom and wife and follower of Christ. Does that mean I balance blogging perfectly with the rest of my life? No. But, without blogging, I wouldn't be the person I am today. Blogging gives me accountability. Blogging gives me the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of women I might not otherwise meet. Blogging allows me to be home with my children, investing in their lives, while still having an  eternal impact on others. Blogging is allowing me to build a platform for the future ministry I believe God had called me to - writing and speaking. Blogging may even be the mode in which God chooses to allow me to live out this ministry. Blogging isn't taking me AWAY from my family - it's allowing me to be here with them.

What I need to work on is using my time wisely... It's the choices I make when I'm NOT blogging that are the issue.
What do you think? Where are you? What was your takeaway?

31 Days to Build a Better Blog - Challenge Link-up, Week Three

We pause for a short interruption to our regular programming...

31DBBBAs I mentioned last week, I'm currently hosting and participating in a blogging challenge - 31 Days to Build a Better Blog.

Day Ten: Setting Up Alerts

A few months ago, I set up a number of alerts with Google Alerts. I wasn't sure what I really wanted to watch for, but I picked a few key phrases I thought might be appropriate and starting getting daily emails. I soon found out that most of the phrases I was watching for weren't really ones that made sense to watch, so with the exception of my vanity alerts (watching for my name and blog name on sites I didn't put it on), I've pretty much deleted all of my alerts. I have a few new ideas floating around in my head, but I think I'll probably have better luck with just searching the terms in Google rather than adding another email to my inbox, considering my needs.
Do you use alerts? What kinds of alerts do you have set up?

---

Day Eleven: Come up with 10 post ideas

When I sat down to do the mind mapping exercise, I pulled up the last ten posts I'd written. I was almost shocked with what I found - I haven't written anything of substance for quite awhile! Definitely not what I was expecting to find with this exercise. I definitely needed to do this exercise to start brainstorming some new posts that have substance - posts that encourage others and point them to God. I want my blog to be a place my readers can come for encouragement and challenge in their walks with God - and it's walked away from that too much lately. My goal for this exercise was to develop ten post ideas that have depth - that encourage and challenge the reader - and I quickly came up with a "theme", five categories, and 20 post titles.

Have you done a blog check-up lately? Do your posts reflect your purpose? How do you brainstorm post ideas?

---

Day Twelve: Develop an editorial calendar for your blog

I've been using an editorial calendar of sorts for quite awhile for my blog. In the past couple of months, I've tried to have my posts planned out at least two weeks in advance. Recently, I've had to schedule posts out a month in advance in order to get everything in that I wanted to be sure to post (giveaways, reviews, linkups, etc.). Having an editorial calendar helps me to be able to see at a glance where I have holes that need posts scheduled. Since I follow a basic weekly pattern, I can see which days I need to come up with a post idea and plug it in. I'm excited to plug in my newest post ideas from day eleven's brainstorming session for the next few months. I'm hoping to get a month or so ahead in my actually post writing so I can focus on something other than blogging for awhile!

Do you use an editorial calendar? Are you a fan of electronic calendars or paper and pencil?

---

Day Thirteen: Take a Trip to the Mall...

Having two small children to tote around makes this exact task a bit difficult, and in reality, observing the general population doesn't really apply all that much to my blog. Instead, I spent some time thinking through the church going experience yesterday, since those are the people I'm more likely to be "aiming" my blog towards.

Where is the average pew dweller at spiritually? Where is that lady's heart when she's sitting the worship service? What struggles are these people facing on a daily basis that I can come alongside them and encourage them in? What can I write that will challenge and encourage these women to deepen their walks with the Lord? How can I help her find calm in the midst of the chaos of her life?

Where is your target audience? Have you spent any time observing them lately? What are they looking for?

---

Day Fourteen: Update a Key Page on Your Blog

Since my site overhaul is fairly new, I've spent a significant amount of time getting everything updated and looking "nice" in the past few months. There are still a few "key pages" I'd like to add to my blog, along with a few elements that might help to create stickier traffic. For instance, I need to find a better way to encourage new readers to subscribe to the blog. I'm still averaging around 50% of visitors being first time visits to the blog - I need to find a way to encourage them to come back and be a part of the community without overwhelming them. One of the most important elements, in my opinion, on any blog is the ability for a first time reader to easily connect with the blogger via email, Twitter, and RSS (subscription feed). I have placed each of these key elements in an easy to locate (and highly visible) location at the top of each page.

What are some key elements you'd like to see on more blogs? What do you look for in a new blog? What helps you to connect with a blogger?

---

Day Fifteen: Find a Blog Buddy

I have had the privilege of connecting with several "blogging buddies" in the past few months. Gather Inspirit and SavvyBlogging have both created great networks that I have enjoyed being a part of and learning from. Gather Inspirit is a source of blogging support from the Christian blogging perspective, whereas SavvyBlogging helps me to grow as a technical blogger.

Specifically, I have enjoyed building relationships with fellow bloggers, taking our friendships beyond the blogs. Meghan Tucker from The Tuckers Take Tennessee is one of my best "blogging" friends! Her encouragement and challenge in my life has helped me to grow as a blogger and as an individual. I love being able to talk to her about anything that's going on in my world - blogging or otherwise!

Do you have a blogging buddy? Have you found yourself part of a blogging community that encourages and supports you?
