31 Days to Build a Better Blog - Challenge Link-up, Week One

We pause for a short interruption to our regular programming...

31DBBBThough I didn't announce it on the blog, I'm currently hosting and participating in a blogging challenge - 31 Days to Build a Better Blog. (If you'd like to join in, we're only partially through the first of six weeks, so you'd have no problem "catching up".) Participants are encouraged to report on each day's tasks in the AP Freewriting BlogFrog community, and each Thursday during the challenge, those participating will have an opportunity to link up their #31DBBB posts for the week on this blog.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As many of you may remember, I'm currently taking an independent study class this semester on blogging - Blogging as a Ministry. One of the assignments for this class is to read the 31 Days to Build a Better Blog ebook and to journal at least 100 words per chapter/day.

---

Day One: Elevator Pitch
The goal of the elevator pitch is to be able to succinctly verbalize what it is that you are about. An elevator pitch is like a first impression - people will choose whether or not they want to know more simply from reading or hearing it. Having an elevator pitch as a blogger helps to keep you focused - gives you a direction and a filter for your blog. Everything else related to your blog - the design, whether or not you monetize, the content, the amount of time you spend on blogging, etc. - is directly impacted by your elevator pitch.

Having an elevator pitch prepared helped me this past weekend to be able to quickly vocalize what my blog was about: "AP Freewriting is a place of encouragement and challenge. I seek to encourage women with the Word of God - both written and spoken - taking it a step beyond devotional, giving them an instant application for their life that day."

What's your elevator pitch?

---

Day Two: Write a List Post
I love lists - sometimes a bit too much! Lists are as much fun to make as they are to read. List posts are popular in the blogosphere. List posts are easy to scan, (usually) keep a post short and to the point, and (usually) look neat and tidy. Lists can be comprehensive, can be used to persuade, can add to the ease of writing, can go viral (especially "how-to" lists), and can break down the otherwise complicated. List posts are a great way to communicate a large amount of material in an easy to read and easy to digest way. Some of my favorite "reference" posts are list posts - they are great posts to bookmark and come back to for future reference.

How have you used lists in your posts lately?

---

Day Three: Promote a Blog Post
Self-promotion is perhaps one of my biggest struggles as a blogger (and as an individual). It's not that I don't like to talk about myself (seriously, I do - too much at times), but I have low self-esteem. I don't like trying to "sell" myself - I'm often afraid of overselling. Promoting a blog post I've written comes a bit easier to me now that I've been doing it for a few months. Twitter and Facebook are great tools to use to direct people to my posts - using the link within the midst of a larger conversation or stream of updates. Internal linking (links within other posts) is also becoming more natural as I grow as a blogger - I've learned how to naturally weave older posts into the content of new posts, adding links to intrigue readers. I'd love to learn more about sending newsletters out, but once again, this is an area where my self-confidence is low.

How do you promote your blog posts? Do you have a favorite way? Least favorite?

---

Day Four: Analyze a Top Blog in Your Niche
This is perhaps the most difficult task in this challenge for me. It's difficult to define my niche, as I seek to be a step beyond a devotional blog, but not to the point of a full Bible study blog. The majority of blogs similar to mine fall into one of these two categories. Being part of this "Devotional/Bible study" niche, there is an undertone of letting God do the promotion on our behalf. We're writing for His glory, and if He wants others to see our writing, then He will guide them to it. But, at the same time, I need to do my part to be visible. It's a fine line, and I haven't found a "top blog" in my niche to follow yet that seems to have this balance figured out.

What niche are you in? What are some of the blogs you use as a standard to follow?

---

How'd you do this week? Did you get through all the tasks? Link up below and let us know!

What I Wore Wednesday, 10.27.10

A number of my blogger friends have recently started linking up to a meme called "What I Wore Wednesday", showcasing their outfits from the week. At first, I was a bit hesitant to join in, because nobody really wants to see what I wear most days. But after talking with these godly women about it this weekend, I've decided to give it a shot, with a twist.

A Few Guidelines/Disclaimers:
  • This is not about what I'm wearing. It's about the fact that I care enough about my husband and my children to get dressed for them and look presentable. It's about setting a tone of productivity for myself and my household. {See Get Along Home's post on Pajama Homeschooling? for a better explanation of this.}
  • Though I may mention certain pieces by name, this is not going to be about the clothes and accessories I am or am not wearing. If I do mention a piece, it's most likely to bring attention to an incredibly talented person who has crafted it or the kind person who gifted me with it.
  • I want my focus not to be on the clothes I wear on the outside, but on the character qualities I'm putting on inside.
Since I just decided to participate yesterday morning, I only have one partial outfit to show you - thanks to my 3.5yo daughter (Jenny) for taking this photo of me:

Cardigan: my little sister (gotta love hand-me-downs)
Character Quality: Patience

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had a great time at Relevant this past weekend, and God is still working in my life, teaching me SO much. I think one of the best things about the weekend was that the focus was on me, not my blog. And, as such, the truths we learned this weekend can be applied to any "extra" in our lives.

Today, I just want to share a few quotes from the weekend - take a few minutes to reflect on them and apply them to your own life.

From Crystal Paine (MoneySavingMom.com)
  • "If you don't have time for God, you don't have time to {insert activity of choice}."
  • "Anyone can be a successful {insert status of choice}, but only one person can be wife to your husband and mother to your children."
  • "If you want to get concentrated work done in an efficient manner, you need to shut out all the noise and just focus on one thing at a time."
  • "There's no such thing as perfect balance." True balance is not spending exactly equal amounts of time on every facet of your life. Rather, it's making sure that, over the course of a few months, you are giving focused attention to every area of your life...
From Sally Clarkson (ITakeJoy.com)
  • "You don't have to be qualified to have a message."
  • "You can't give away what you don't possess in your heart."
  • This is not the pinnacle of your ministry. Today is about your family.
  • "You can't do everything." There is a cost to every commitment you make.
From Serena Woods (graceisforsinners.com)
  • Just because you know all of the rules, it doesn't mean you'll follow them.
  • If you hoard grace, you kill it.
These quotes are just a small snippet of the TRUTH that was spoken into our lives this past weekend. I can't wait to come to a point of digesting and processing at which I am able to put into words all that God is teaching me!

What does Noah have to do with being Relevant?

This past weekend, I had the privilege of attending the Relevant Conference in PA, thanks to The Fine Grind. I went expecting to learn one thing, and came home having learned something completely different (and SO much better).

Here are the links I mentioned in the video above:
What did God teach you this weekend? Did you read something, hear something, or experience something that changed how you are walking with God?

Do you have time to blog?

Last night's keynote address from Crystal Paine (Money Saving Mom) was aimed directly at me! I knew coming in that this was going to be a huge take-away session personally, and she was spot on. Her talk was entitled, "Keeping the First Things First," and she shared from personal experience what NOT keeping the first things first results in.
If you don't have time for God {i.e. spending time in His Word and in prayer}, you don't have time to blog.
While I know this to be true, and I even share this truth with others, how many times do I fail to live it out in my own life? Needless to say, this morning, I made sure to start with God before ever turning my computer on.

Have you spent time with Him this morning?

Letting go of my anxieties...

I haven't flown in over 5 years, and I've never had to figure out the airport on my own. I'm a little bit (read LOT) nervous about all the baggage checking, boarding pass printing, gate finding, etc I'll be doing on Thursday.

I'm not a fashionista. My "everyday" wear is a sweatshirt over a tank top and a pair of jeans (sometimes they're even clean). I don't even really own more than a couple of accessories, most of which are packed away in a box somewhere that I can't find because I never wear them. And my one pair of "good jeans" don't really fit and I don't like the cut. And let's not get started on shoes.

I fear rejection. I can be outgoing, but it's just a front. I often find myself "starting" a group, then quickly find myself somewhere on the outside of the group. I'm scared it will happen again this week.

I'm sure there are plenty more anxious thoughts I could list and mull over, working myself up over "nothing", but instead, I'm choosing to cling to Philippians 4.6-7:
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

I'll see you all AFTER Relevant!!

Making our HOUSE a HOME!

While much of my house is still a blank canvas, waiting to have personality added, I have started decorating some areas, and I thought I'd share some of the personal touches we've added to our new house.

When you first enter the house, these beautiful plaques greet you:

Once inside, you are "welcome" to hang your coat in the closet and make yourself at home.

If you continue down the hallway, you'll see this beautiful print from Red Letter Words:

In the living room, you can see pictures of our family and friends around the piano:

The guest bath downstairs provides a relaxing atmosphere to refresh yourself:

Upstairs, the kids' bathroom is full of fun:

And we wouldn't want to forget one of the staple ingredients to making our home OUR home - showing our support of the Michigan Wolverines. We bleed BLUE!! (We still need to hang the flag and pennant in the office.)

What do you think? Think it's starting to look more like a home than a house?

A fresh start...

It has definitely been a crazy past couple of weeks in my life, and I was so glad that I had the majority of my blog posts planned out to create a bit of ease in my writing schedule. However, I've started feeling a bit "forced" with my writing of the posts, and I'm feeling like I've lost the personal connection with what I'm writing, so I'm going to be stepping back from the series I've been writing, and try to connect more with the Word, allowing my posts to be more about what God is teaching me on a daily basis as I spend time in His Word.

The next eight weeks won't be any less chaotic than the past eight weeks (I'll be taking two online classes along with my independent study), but I won't be in the midst of a major move, and part of my schoolwork will actually include spending time working on blogging (the 31 Days to Build a Better Blog challenge starts next Monday). I'm hoping to use these next two months to create a routine in my life, once again, getting back on track with saying #HelloMornings, and having scheduled time for each of the tasks I need to complete throughout the week.

So, I want to offer you the chance to have a say in what I write about over the next several weeks. Is there a passage you'd like me to study? A topic you'd like me to write about? Something you'd like to share with all of us? I'm open to suggestions, guest posts, etc... leave me a comment or send me an email!

"Don't Look Back" by Lynette Eason

Back in April, I was introduced to a new suspense/thriller author who I quickly added to my "must read" list. After reading her latest book, Don't Look Back, Lynette Eason is on my "must read" list to stay!

Don't Look Back (Women of Justice Series #2)From the back cover: Twelve years ago, forensic anthropologist Jamie Cash survived a brutal kidnapping. After years of therapy, she has made a life for herself - though one that is haunted by memories of her terrifying past. She finally lets herself belief that she can have a close relationship with a man, when signs start appearing that point to one frightening fact - her attacker is back and ready to finish the job he started all those years ago.

Can she escape his grasp a second time? And will she ever be able to let down her guard enough to find true love?

Filled with heart-stopping suspense, gritty realism, and a touch of romance, Don't Look Back pulls you into its twists and turns to hold you there until the very last page.

I loved the romance, the suspense, and the real-life faith throughout the book. Just when you think you have the story figured out, Eason throws a new twist into play that entices you to read a little bit faster. Another great book in the Women of Justice series!

Thanks to Revell for providing a copy of this book for review. Get your own copy, available October 2010 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.

How to Pray for Your Church

This will be the final post in the How to Pray for... series. I hope you've been encouraged and challenged as you've considered how you pray for others. Be sure to read the other posts in the series if you've missed them:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I thought about how to pray for your church, I thought of Paul's encouragement in Philippians (thanks to Becky!) to live in unity with one another, seeking each others' best interest above your own:
As we seek to fellowship with one another, Lord, I pray that our church would be united in spirit, intent on one purpose. I pray that no one will do anything from selfishness or empty conceit, but that in humility of mind, we might each regard one another as more important than ourselves. I pray that our church would not only look out for our own interests, but we might care for the needs of others outside our congregation. Let our love be reflective of Your love for us, Lord. (Philippians 2.1-4)
Prayers for your church leaders are also vital, not only for your pastor, but also for those in leadership positions:
Lord, I pray that you would bring our church leaders that follow hard after You. I pray that they would have integrity and honesty. I pray that they would seek to serve You, not themselves. May our leaders reflect Your values not only in the church but also in their homes and their workplaces. I pray that our church leadership would keep their eyes on You. (1 Timothy 3, etc.)
Additional Scriptures to pray include:
Let all things be done for edification. (1 Corinthians 14.26b)
Romans 12.4-6
Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor. (Romans 12.10)
If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. (Romans 12.18)
Colossians 2.2-3, 8
How do you pray for your church?

Who & Why Wednesday: God is HOLY

Who is God? God is HOLY: Psalm 30

Why do I care? You are faithful and holy, Lord, setting the example that I am to mold my life after; yet You are gracious to me when I fail to live up to Your standard. You set the bar at perfection, knowing that I'll never reach it this side of eternity, yet You accept me as I am, helping me and uplifting me as You bring me closer to the image of Your Son.  You pick me up when I'm down, and You heal me when I'm broken. Thank You, Lord, for caring so much about me!

Top 10 Tuesday: Pictures of my NEW HOUSE!!

We're having an Open House for our family and friends to come see our new house this Saturday, and I'd love for you all to come! However, I'm realistic enough to know that the likelihood of that happening is slim-to-none, so I thought I'd take you on a virtual tour today. (Please pardon the boxes and lack of wall decor - I'm hoping to have it done before Saturday!)

  1. We'll start in my office - where I do most of my blogging/writing. As you can see, I *love* books and have a LOT! (Notice my BusyBodyBook planner open on my desk - I was busy planning my blog posts.)
  2. Next, we'll move down the hall to the kitchen/dining area. Please excuse my garage sale table and chairs - they'll be getting replaced this spring.
  3. A closer view of my kitchen... I love my new stove - finally a range that boils water in five minutes (versus the 20+ minutes of the one at our rental house)!
  4. Our living room, complete with hand-me-down and/or garage sale furniture (minus the TV/stand). This room will also be getting new furnishings come spring!
  5. Part of the master bedroom. This room is sorely lacking personality! (Our box-springs didn't fit up the stairs, so we're sleeping on our mattress on the floor until we get around to buying a new bed. We've been planning to get a king-sized bed, so this just gave us an excuse to do so a bit sooner than planned.)
  6. The kids' toy room. I am SO excited about this room - finally a place to keep all the toys!
  7. The kids' bathroom - my sister and mom picked out the monster theme for it, and they LOVE it!
  8. Jenny's room - she loves having a room to herself!
  9. Back downstairs, the view from the entryway.
  10. View from the kitchen towards the dining area and my office (including half-bath and laundry in downstairs hallway).
I hope you enjoyed your virtual tour of our new home! If you're ever in the area, I'd love to show it to you in person!

Why Should Christians Pray? Part One - What is Prayer?

Over the next couple of weeks, I want us to take a look at prayer, answering the question: "If God is immutable and omniscient, then why should Christians even bother to pray?" Today's post will be part one in a four-part series titled, Why Should Christians Pray?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why Should Christians Pray?
If God is immutable and omniscient, then why should Christians even bother to pray? If God is immutable, then it would seem that prayer can’t change His mind about what He’s going to do. If God is omniscient, then He already knows what’s going on – why bother telling Him? God's immutability and omniscience are not arguments against prayer, but they help to answer the question, "Why should Christians pray?" In order to understand why Christians should pray, a biblical definition of prayer and an understanding of what it means for God to be immutable and omniscient must be established.
What is Prayer?
Ask any five people for a definition of prayer, and they will most likely have five different ideas of what prayer is: petition, communication [with God], listening, “putting my cares, hopes, [and] dreams in the hands of the Most High,” even “folding your hands and talking to God every day”[1]. Rodney Stark, a sociology professor at Baylor University, said, “[Prayer is] one of the most common and unacknowledged activities on the planet”[2]. For Christians, prayer is a central activity in everyday life, but what is prayer?
The New Strong’s Expanded Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible[3] lists more than twenty Greek or Hebrew words that have been translated into over 540 forms of the word pray in the King James Version. In Psalm 5.2, the word translated pray is a verb meaning “to pray, intervene, mediate, judge” (H6419). Pray is translated to mean beseech in Jonah 4.2 (H577). Other times, pray has a connotation of supplication (G4336), worship (G4335), or petition (G1189).
According to the Westminster Shorter Catechism, “Prayer is an offering up of our desires unto God, for things agreeable to his will, in the name of Christ, with confession of our sins, and thankful acknowledgment of his mercies”[4]. In prayer, individuals come to God, yielding their will to His will, acknowledging their dependence on Him. The expression of the believer’s dependence upon Christ is realized in prayer[5].
In prayer, believers admit their dependence on the Holy Spirit for guidance as they seek to know and do God’s will. The believer’s response to God as he relies on the Spirit of God to guide him comes through prayer. Prayer includes praise through the Spirit, thanksgiving for the work of the Spirit, confession of failure to obey and trust the Spirit, and petition for the help of the Spirit[6]. Through prayer, humans express their trust in the Holy Spirit to guide them.
In the simplest sense, prayer is nothing more than having a conversation with God[7]. Prayer is “an expression of a Christian’s unbroken relationship with the Father”[8]. Prayer is how individuals communicate with God – how they talk to Him about what they’re thinking, feeling, desiring, experiencing, etc. What a person prays reveals the spiritual condition of his heart[9], revealing the state of his present relationship with God.
Prayer is not a laundry list of wants and desires offered up to God. The object of prayer is not to have one’s will done in heaven, but petitioning for God’s will to be done on earth (Matthew 6.10). O. Hallesby said that prayer is “an attitude of our hearts toward God… When we petition God in prayer, we come to Christ and tell Him what we and those for whom we pray are lacking. It is opening up our needy lives to Him”[10]. Prayer is admittance of one’s need of and dependence on God. It is a humbling of one’s self before Him, allowing Him to work His will in one’s life, molding one’s will to His.
Prayer is living life in awareness of and communication with God. Burke encourages his readers to talk with God about whatever they are thinking about. Whatever believers spend time thinking about is what is most important to them, and that’s where God wants to do life with them[11]. Prayer is a means of including God in the intimate details of one’s life.
Prayer encompasses all of these areas and more, but most simply, prayer is expressing one’s thoughts and feelings to God. Having this biblical understanding of what prayer is establishes a foundation for reconciling God’s immutability and omniscience with prayer.
