My excuse...

I hate to do it, but the rest of the "normal" posts for the remainder of this week are going to be postponed.

Life is chaos around here:
  • I've been working on my research paper this week (it's not quite finished).
  • We're closing on our house this morning!
  • We're moving today, tomorrow, and Saturday.
  • Yesterday at 2:30pm, this is what I had boxed up.
  • And this is *part* of what I still had left to box.
I hope to return to regular posting on Monday, as long as I have internet and can find my computer amidst the boxes.

Have a GREAT weekend!

Who & Why Wednesday: God is my HIDING PLACE

Who is God? God is my HIDING PLACE: Psalm 28
Why do I care? This Psalm is full of names and attributes of God that invite me to run into His outstretched arms in times of inability and trial. He is the ROCK I can build my life upon - the foundation that will never crumble. He is my AVENGER - He will see justice paid, whether on earth or in the end of time; it is not my place to worry about it. He is my STRENGTH when I have none. He is a SHIELD to protect me from evil. He is my SAVIOR. He is my SHEPHERD - guiding me to His will for my life.

Top 10 Things my Relevant Roomies should know about me...

The Relevant Conference is only three-and-a-half weeks away! So excited, but so nervous. I had my first airport nightmare this weekend.

In light of the upcoming conference, some of the gals attending the conference have started a link-up to share a bit about themselves with their roommates, and I thought I'd join in today.

I've never met any of my roommates, but that doesn't phase me. I tend to do well in situations with new people. I've enjoyed getting to know these ladies through their blogs and on Twitter, and I can't wait to meet them!
Ten things my Relevant Roomies should know about me:
  1. I'm loud. Especially when I get tired and excited. Beware of my laughter!
  2. I'm tall. Without heels on, I'm just shy of 5'10, with heels, I tend to be closer to 6'.
  3. I'm outgoing, but it's just a front. In reality, I just want to be liked.
  4. I'm young. Unlike the majority of the conference goers in their mid-30s (I'm guessing), I'm a mere 26 years old.
  5. I'm a pretty causal dresser. My daily wardrobe at home consists of sweats and tshirts. I'll try to dress it up a bit for the conference - I usually try to at least look put together in public.
  6. I'm excited to leave my family at home. I haven't been away from my entire family overnight in a long time. It will be so nice not to have to worry about them for a weekend!
  7. I'm competitive. If there's a competition (even in jest), I'll probably go all out. That's just my nature. Can't wait for the game night fun!
  8. I'm a native Michigander. Though I live in Indiana currently, my heart resides in Michigan. We bleed Blue & Maize at our house.
  9. I'm a book-a-holic. If you haven't figured it out from all my book reviews, I *love* to read!
  10. I am so excited to room with you! I cannot wait to meet you all in person and to get to know you better. We are going to have a BLAST at Relevant and come home IRL friends!
What are some things I should know about you?

Praising God for Insomnia

A few weeks ago, I sat down one morning with only a few moments to myself before I needed to get the kids up, dressed, fed, and out the door. The chaos of my life was weighing on my mind, so I took out a sheet of paper and made a "to-do" list, writing down all the things I wanted to accomplish that day. After emptying my mental list on to the paper, I spent a few minutes with God. The first thing I prayed was:
Lord, I lay my "to-do" list at Your feet today. Add or subtract from it as You choose - by Your Spirit, guide me throughout the day to accomplish Your will in my life.
Now, my "to-do" list had a LOT of tasks on it that I hoped to accomplish that day. Some were obviously more important than others, and some were non-negotiables. Leaving my list with God, I went about my day, making time to accomplish some of the tasks on my list.

About half way through the day, I was getting very cranky and irritable, so I decided that the wise thing to do would be to leave my "to-do" list aside for an hour or so and take a nap with the kids. Three hours later, I woke up less cranky.

That evening, we headed to bed around 9:30pm (which is a little bit earlier than "normal", but not out of the ordinary), and I was surprised to feel as tired as I did, considering the nap I'd taken. So I laid down and attempted to fall asleep, but my brain wouldn't shut off. An hour later, I was back out of bed and online trying to make the most out of my insomnia.

(Did you know that Twitter is actually quite quiet after 12am EST?)

Around 2am, I was starting to feel a bit tired and ready to hit the sack again. I actually made a joke (to myself) about Bejeweled (my time killer of choice) being on God's "to-do" list for me that day. I was getting ready to get off the computer when I noticed that a friend had just gotten on (thanks to Skype alerting me). I thought it odd for her to be on that time of night, so I decided to chat with her to see what was up.

That 2:30am Skype conversation was God-appointed. It was an addition to my "to-do" list that God had allowed me to "complete" due to the addition of the three hour nap earlier in the day. My friend was stressed and overwhelmed by life. She had woken up in the middle of the night because she'd forgotten to complete a task earlier in the day. I was able to pray for her right then, praying for God to grant her peace.

After I prayed for her, I headed to bed doing something I never thought possible... I was praising God for insomnia!

What additions to your "to-do" list do you need to be praising God for? Are there things in your life that seem like they have no value? Is God using the seemingly ordinary for His glory?

A Week in Review, 9.24.10

Once again, I can't believe Friday has already arrived... where did this week go? I hit the ground running this week, and I don't think I ever caught up!
  • Monday, I spent the morning on the phone calling around setting up our utilities and finalizing our last minute appointments in order to be able to close before the end of the month. Our closing is set for Thursday morning!
  • Tuesday, the kids and I headed to the library for 2's story time and got the oil changed in the van.
  • Wednesday, we were back to the library for 3's story time, shopped for our weekly groceries at Aldi, and had AWANA and prayer meeting in the evening.
  • Thursday, we had a meeting with our lender in the morning, bought some more last minute things for the house, and got to spend some time checking out the latest stages of the home building process (we have flooring, cabinets, and more now).
  • Oh, and I did school during the week too... it's been crazy!
On the blog, we've had a busy week, too.
How was your week?

How to Pray for the Government Leaders and Your Country

Be sure to check out the other posts in the How to Pray for... series:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
This is definitely an area of prayer that I fail miserably at. I seldom remember to pray for my country or the leaders that God has ordained to run it. However, as God has placed these men and women in authority over us (Romans 13.1-5), we must continually lift them up in prayer, asking God to guide them and direct them.
First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. - 1 Timothy 2.1-2
The Navigators have a great resource on their website, teaching us how to pray for government leaders.
  • Pray with confidence that God has sovereignly placed them in power: Romans 13.1-5
  • Pray with humility and repentance: "Leaders, especially those who are elected through a democratic process, may reflect the spiritual and moral character of a nation."
  • Pray biblically: "Pray that [your] country's president, Supreme Court justices, and other political leaders will enact and uphold just laws that protect the poor and defenseless."
  • Pray faithfully: Create a system for praying for government leaders on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Pray patiently: God's time table is not our own. Remember that His schedule is perfect and trust Him.
Praying Scripture is another great way to pray for government leaders (original source). Pray that your government leaders will:
  • Seek Truth: 2 Thesslonians 2.10-12
  • Be wise: Proverbs 4.5-8; Psalm 119.98-100
  • Be courageous and have integrity: Proverbs 10.9; Proverbs 11.3
  • Have sharp insight and be discerning: 1 Thessalonians 5.21-22; 1 John 4.1
  • Align and surround themselves with godly counsel: Psalm 1.1; Proverbs 29.12; Proverbs 24.6
  • Have God's hand of protection on themselves and their families: Psalm 46.1-3
Just as there are many ways to pray for your government leaders, there are many ways to pray for your country. As I was reading in my quiet time this week, I came across a few verses that I want to start praying over my country:
For they have turned their back to Me, and not their face; but in the time of trouble they will say, "Arise and save us"... Yet you said, "I am innocent; surely His anger is turned away from me." Behold, I will enter into judgment with you because you say, "I have not sinned." - Jeremiah 2.27b, 35
I see my country headed down this same path that Judah was on: knowing about God and calling themselves Christians by name, but only calling on God in times of trouble.

I pray that my country will turn from its self-centeredness and call on God.

How are you praying for your government leaders and your country? Do you have any resources that you'd like to share?

Who & Why Wednesday: God is my GUIDE

Who is God? God is my GUIDE: Proverbs 3.5-6; 16.3, 9
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. - Proverbs 3.5-6
Why do I care? Knowing that I can plan until I'm blue in the face, yet He already has my path determined, I need to seek Him before I seek to determine what I should/shouldn't do. Knowing Him and spending time with Him is the only way to be able to follow His leading. If I can't distinguish His voice from all the others, I'll end up walking in circles. I need to learn to listen to and follow my Leader!

I have the opportunity to guest post on Marketplace Mommies today! Marketplace Mommies is a blog that is designed to "[help] mommies create, market, and monetize their home business blogs." I was honored when Honey asked if I'd share with her readers.
I don't know about you, but I can easily waste hours online. It's not uncommon for me to get on the computer to "check one thing really quickly", and find myself still online two (or more) hours later. Lately, I've been trying to make a more conscious effort to spend less time online...

"A Hope Undaunted" by Julie Lessman

Hope Undaunted, A: A Novel (Winds of Change)I just discovered a new "favorite" author this weekend. I finally had the chance to sit down and read A Hope Undaunted, and I didn't want to put it down!

Katie O'Connor is a spit-fire girl, with her life mapped out before her. She knows what she wants and she is determined to get it. Her father puts the brakes on her plans as the summer begins, forcing Katie to experience life in a new way. Katie must choose which life she truly wants to live - which life God has in store for her.

From the back cover: The 1920s are drawing to a close, and feisty Katie O'Connor is the epitome of the new woman - smart and sassy with goals for her future that include the perfect husband and a challenging career in law. Her boyfriend Jack fits all of her criteria for a husband - good-looking, well-connected, wealthy, and eating out of her hand. But when she is forced to spend the summer of 1929 with Luke McGee, the bane of her childhood existence, Katie comes face-to-face with a choice. Will she follow her well-laid plans to marry Jack? Or will she fall for the man she swore to despise forever?

My only "dislike" about the book was the few subplots that were thrown in the mix. While they added a bit of color to the story, they weren't crucial to this book's plot. I'm left wondering if they are setting up book two in the series.

I will definitely be looking for more books by Julie Lessman in the very near future!

{P.S. Enter here for a chance to win a Kindle from Julie!}

Thanks to Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group, for providing a copy of this book for review.

A Great Work! (Guest Post)

I'm so excited to share a guest post with you all today! Thanks to Danielle for sharing this great post...
-------------------------------

As moms, we can be torn in so many directions. More lists, more organization, more groups, more blogging, more shopping, more cleaning, more sports and classes, more demands at work, more driving, more things to volunteer for. It’s enough sometimes to make our heads spin and never know how to slow down. How will we know when to say “NO” and prioritize what is best for our children and us?

Let us not forget that just as in all things in our lives, there are seasons of parenting.  Meaning sometimes we need to be saying more “No’s” in order to stay focused on our kids and be the mom or dad that God has called us to be. Check out what the bible says in Nehemiah 6.3-4:
So I sent messengers back with this: “I’m doing a great work; I can’t come down. Why should the work come to a standstill just so I can come down to see you?” Four times they sent this message and four times I gave them my answer.
Now Nehemiah was working hard and not once, or twice, not three times, but FOUR different times messengers came to him with messages that would cause him to stop doing his work! He declined all four times because he was focused on what his priority was and what God had called him to do. He knew that the job set before him was a “Great work!”

Try looking at your parenting today and tell yourself, "it's a GREAT work! I cannot come down." You'll be amazed at how it helps narrow your focus and you'll be able to say "No" to the things you don't need to do now and maybe just need to wait and do in another season. Saying "No" is not because you are out of balance or even that you don't want to do some of those things. But rather, it helps you to narrow your focus on what is the most important thing.

Stay the course! The job you are doing as a parent is "a great work.” It is hard work. No doubt. But remember, it’s a GREAT work!

How to Pray for Your Husband

As we moved through our series, "How to Pray for...", we've looked at:
This week, I want to take a look at How to Pray for Your Husband. We all know that we should pray for our husbands, but actually knowing how to pray for him is sometimes a struggle. Some of you have husbands who are running hard after Jesus, encouraging you to run hard too. Others of you have husbands who are not walking with the Lord, leaving the spiritual health of your household in your hands. Regardless of where your husband stands with the Lord, as his wife, it is your responsibility to pray for him. I want to point you to some helpful resources that teach us how to pray for our husbands.

If you don't already own a copy of Stormie Omartian's book, The Power of a Praying Wife, I would highly recommend that you get a copy. This book was given to me as a wedding shower gift, and I have read it and used it over and over again in my five years of marriage. The book is broken down into 30 chapters, each focusing on an aspect of your husband's life to pray over. Each chapter ends with a prayer and Scripture to pray over your husband. A few times a year, I add this book to my morning routine, praying a chapter a day for a month.

Another great resource is the prayer calendar provided by Revive Our Hearts. This ministry has put together a great resource, 31 Days of Prayers for Your Husband, that you could use to structure your daily prayer time for your husband. Each day focuses on a specific area of your husband's life and provides you with a few Scripture verses to pray over him.

If you like to pray prayers that have already been written out for you, Andrew Case has a new book out, Prayers of an Excellent Wife. More than 200 pages of prayers written with Scripture as the core, this book is an excellent resource for learning to pray Scripture over your husband.

Not only do we need to pray over the character of our husbands, but we need to pray over their beings. This resource provides Scripture to pray over each part of his body.

Pamm's House shares a weekly prayer calendar she found for praying for your husband:
  • Sunday
    • Pray that your husband might become a holy man, a man of prayer, mature in the Lord, growing in his knowledge of God. (I Thessalonians 5:23; Colossians 4:12; Ephesians 6:18, 1:18-19, 3:16-19).
    • Pray that your husband might daily seek God with all his heart, walking in the Spirit moment by moment, growing in his dependence on Him (Psalm 119:1-2, 27:4; Proverbs 3:5-6; John 15:5).
  • Monday:
    • Pray that your husband might learn to take every thought captive, to not be conformed to the world's thinking and to think Biblically. (Romans 12:2; 2 Corinthians 10:5).
    • Pray that your husband would learn to not depend on his circumstances for happiness but on God alone (Habakkuk 3:17-19).
  • Tuesday:
    • Pray that your husband might have new strength in the midst of his busy schedule and that the Lord might infuse him with His strength (Isaiah 40:31; Ephesians 3:14-19).
    • Pray that your husband's self-image might be a reflection of the Lord's thoughts toward him (Ephesians 1:17-19; Romans 12:3; Psalm 139).
  • Wednesday:
    • Pray that your husband might become not driven but a called man, with well thought-through and prayed-through goals in life (1 Corinthians 9:24-27).
    • Pray that the Lord might give your husband wisdom to lead his family physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually (Ephesians 1:17-19; James 1:5-7).
  • Thursday:
    • Pray that your husband might stand firm against the schemes of the devil and resist Satan in all circumstances. (Ephesians 6:10-18; James 4:7).
    • Pray that your husband might not be deceived into unbelief or sin (Galatians 6:7).
  • Friday:
    • That the fruit of the Spirit might be exhibited more and more in his life (Galatians 5:22-23).
    • That he might learn to love as God has commanded (1 Corinthians 13:4-7; Romans 12:8-10).
  • Saturday:
    • That the Lord might protect your husband, guarding his course (Proverbs 2:8).
    • Pray that your husband might learn to manage his time well (Ephesians 5:15) .
How do you pray for your husband?

I'm Guest Posting (Times Two) Today!

I'm sharing with Some Girl's readers today as she takes a break from the blog this week. We're talking about The Holiness of God:
I struggle, too often, to picture God as Holy. Not that I deny the fact, because holiness is His highest and most important characteristic, but I struggle to view Him as such.

Who & Why Wednesday: God is SOVEREIGN

Who is God? God is SOVEREIGN: Daniel 4.17b; Daniel 2.20-22
That they may know that You alone, whose name is the LORD, Are the Most High over all the earth. - Psalm 83.18

Why do I care? God is sovereign - in control of all things. He has a plan (Romans 8.28) - everything is under His control and design. When I try to take matters into my own hands or worry about anything, it is sin. I must not only acknowledge that God is sovereign, but I must also trust Him to work all things together for my good - my being molded into the image of His Son. I can trust God with the small details of my life as well as the large details - He is in control and sovereign over all things!

I'm Guest Posting on Modern Alternative Mama Today!

Here's a glimpse of what I'm sharing over at Modern Alternative Mama's blog today:
I cannot seem to stay focused on one task at a time lately. My brain is stressed to the max lately as I try to balance being a mom, being a blogger, being a wife, being a daughter of the King, being a graduate student, and being a friend. No matter what I try to do, my life seems to out of balance. My focus is being pulled in so many different directions, that my life is quickly becoming un-focused. My life needs to be focused, and learning to say "no" is a big part of that.
Join me over there to read the rest...

Moving Checklist

We just found out on Friday that our closing date has been moved up (assuming the builders are finished to the point of occupancy) to the 27th of this month. That means we're less than TWO WEEKS away from closing and just two-and-a-half weeks away from the big moving day! I haven't even started packing yet - it's going to be a zoo around here!

I thought I'd share a few things I still need to do before we move:
  1. Buy/make window treatments.
  2. Buy shower curtain rods and a shower curtain.
  3. Pack all of our belongings.
  4. Decide whether or not to move our garden with us - tomatoes and peppers are still going strong.
  5. Determine what furniture is going in which rooms.
  6. Get the rest of the kids' bedroom furniture from my parents' house in Michigan.
  7. Meet with our loan officer for "loan counseling" before we can close.
  8. Switch the utilities to our name.
  9. Call the cable company to be sure we have internet/TV/phone ready to go when we get to the new house (although, I could just let my husband do that, since that's what he does for a living).
  10. What am I forgetting??

Thoughts on Ministry

This post was written "quickly" and off the top of my head. Please forgive me if it doesn't make sense in spots. I just needed to get it all out before I talked myself out of it.

Last night, I attended a concert given by Timothy Mark. It wasn't the first time I've seen him in concert, so it wasn't the first time I've heard his story. But for some reason, last night, his story resonated with me. God used Timothy's example of walking by faith, trusting God to provide, to help me to make some decisions about my own ministry.

Lately I've been feeling the pull. You know, the one to turn your blog into a business? I've been walking the fine line between business and ministry for a month or so now, not sure which side of the line I really wanted to end up on. I view the blog as a ministry - as a springboard for future ministry. But at the same time, I really want the blog to be able to be self-sufficient and even allow for me to be somewhat compensated for the time and resources I put into it. Yet the idea of "charging" people for "encouragement" seems a bit backwards to me. This blog is something I would continue to do even if I didn't ever receive a single penny.

Anyways, even if none of that made any sense, the bottom line is that I want to continue to do what I'm doing, but without the motivation of money. All of my "paid" services (advertising, ebooks, etc) will be by donation from now on. While I will have "suggested donation" increments set for my services, I will not require payment for my services (though availability will still be limited). When I have ebooks available, downloads will be free with an option to donate available. While I will continue to welcome sponsorship, I will also have a "tip jar" available for anyone who would like to donate to the ministry.

It is a ministry - and I will continue to view it as such. Please help to hold me to this, as the pull and allure of monetizing is so great. Thank you for your part in making this ministry a success.

It's a Disciple's Cross Giveaway!

I am so excited about today's Disciple's Cross giveaway!

What is a Disciple's Cross?
The Disciple's Cross is made up of three distinct components. The simulated leather cord reminds us of the leather straps used to beat our Savior; the wrapped wire stands for the thorn branches twisted into a crown to mock the King of Kings; and the nails represent the large spikes that were driven into the hands and feet of the Lord of Lords. As you carry your Disciple's Cross with you, consider the sacrifice that Jesus made for you and take up your cross and follow Him.

A bit of history:
I started making Disciple's Cross necklaces in 2007, with the intention at the time of being able to stay home full-time with my daughter from the income, however, I soon discovered I didn't want to make 400 crosses a week in order to participate in the buyback program that was offered. So, I started making the crosses "for fun" and tried to sell them myself. Selling them to my co-workers, to a couple of Christian camps (for their general stores), and through a craft sale, I was able to make a small profit while not having the crosses be the focus of my life. After a year or so, life got busy (we added another small child to our family), so I let the crosses go for awhile. I sold a few here and there, but didn't have a constant source to sell and promote them.

(Prize color may vary.)
Presently:
A month or so ago, I decided to get my supplies back out and make a few crosses, using the blog-o-sphere to market and sell them. I'm excited to have them being sold in a number of Open Sky stores:

The Giveaway:
I will be giving away two Disciple's Crosses this week!

Company Girls Coffee, 9.10

Wow... is it Friday again already?! This week has FLOWN by!

Last weekend, we were privileged to be treated by my in-laws to a weekend at one of our favorite places on this earth: Camp Barakel. Not only did they treat us w/ a weekend there, but they joined us for a fun weekend of Family Camp! It was a long drive (6.5 hours there, 7.5 hours back), but it was a GREAT weekend together as a family and hearing incredible preaching from the Word of God. It was a great privilege to introduce our kids to our "camp family" and share our love of Barakel with them. (My husband and I actually met at Barakel as camper counselors in college, and I started spending at least one week each summer at Barakel at the age of 8, ending only when I got married five years ago.) We hope to have the privilege of serving as resident missionary staff at Barakel some day.

This week, I've been playing catch-up from being unplugged for five days. I think I finally got caught up mid-day Wednesday, but then I realized I had a 3-4 page literary analysis paper due on Friday that I didn't have a clue how to write. I'm still working on putting it together, but I'm much closer today than I was on Wednesday!

An added bonus for this week has been the fact that my hubby's been on vacation all week. It's been so nice having him home with us and spending some quality time together as a family. I've been "on vacation" a bit in my mind, too, this week. I haven't been getting up early or running or even getting in the Word like I should be. I've been slacking in this department, so while I don't want to see him head back to work on Sunday, I'm looking forward to getting back into my "regular" routine!

Did you miss any of these posts on AP Freewriting this week?
I hope you've all had a great week! Enjoy the cooler temperatures as Autumn falls upon us.

How to Pray for Your Pastor

So far in the How to Pray for series, we've looked at How to Pray for Missionaries and How to Pray for Your Kids. Today, I want to take a look at How to Pray for Your Pastor.
Any church may have a mighty man of God for its pastor, if it is willing to pay the price, and that price is not a big salary, but great praying. - RA Torrey, The Power of Prayer
A great way to pray for your pastor is to use the acrostic of P-A-S-T-O-R to remember specific requests to pray about:
  • P: Purity. Pray that your pastor will remain pure in the face of constant pressure in an immoral culture (1 Timothy 3.7b).
  • A: Adversity. Pray for your pastor that he will be able to confront adversity with faith and endurance (1 Peter 1.6-9).
  • S: Strength. Most pastors work long hours and at least six days a week. Pray that he will have the strength to continue his ministry (2 Thessalonians 2.16-17).
  • T: Teaching. Pray for your pastor that his teaching and preaching will be effective, powerful, and clear (Colossians 3.4).
  • O: Organization. Your pastor has more to do than any one person can handle. Pray for your pastor that he will be able to prioritize correctly (Ephesians 5.15-17).
  • R: Rest. Your pastor needs rest. Pray that your pastor will sleep well each night and that he will take enough time away from ministry so that he does not get worn out (Matthew 11.28).
You could also use this prayer calendar to pray for your pastor each day of the week:
  • Sunday: Pray for your pastor's ministry.
  • Monday: Pray for your pastor's relationship with the Lord.
  • Tuesday: Pray for your pastor's relationship with the congregation and community.
  • Wednesday: Pray for your pastor's leadership, guidance, and direction.
  • Thursday: Pray for your pastor's protection, health, and wholeness.
  • Friday: Pray for your pastor's stewardship and priorities.
  • Saturday: Pray for your pastor's family.
Revive our Hearts has put together 31 Days of Praying for Your Pastor and 31 Days of Praying for Your Pastor's Wife that would be great resources to print out and keep with your prayer list.
How do you pray for your pastor?

Dressing up my wardrobe for Relevant

I've been eagerly anticipating the Relevant Conference in October, but at the same time, I've been wondering what I'll wear. Today, Sarah Mae introduced a brand new contest sponsored by DownEast Basics to be able to win an outfit to wear to Relevant.

I knew I would LOVE to have the opportunity to wear one of these amazingly cute outfits, so I decided to share a quick vlog with you all to show you why I could really benefit from winning this contest:

As you can see, I am a pretty causal dresser (if you hadn't already noticed from the vlogs I did for the Maximize Your Mornings challenge). I really could use some nicer pieces added to my wardrobe, and I'd love to win this outfit from DownEast Basics:

    What outfit would you choose?

Edit: After re-reading the "rules" for the contest, I realized that I had to pick pieces from the "New Arrivals", so my outfit of choice for the conference runway would be: a Green Pin Dot Skirt and a Dozen Roses Top.

Who & Why Wednesday: God is my SHEPHERD

Who is God? God is my SHEPHERD: Psalm 23; 1 Peter 2.25; John 10.11, 14ff

Why do I care? Christ is the "Shepherd & Guardian" of my soul (1 Peter 2.25). He laid down His life for me (John 10.11) when He died on the cross. As sheep know the voice of their shepherd, I must learn to know and listen to His voice, obeying it without question because He wants to led me to the things I need for survival (Psalm 23).

    Unplugging for five days...

I was unplugged from Thursday afternoon til around 8:30pm last night. It was great to be able to step away from technology for the weekend and enjoy spending quality time with my family. However, coming back "online" after a few days away is always slightly overwhelming:
    1. I came back to an inbox full of emails, most of which required a response of some sort. (I managed to take care of most of them last night, but that used up my remaining brain power, so I stopped after emails.)
    2. I actually won two giveaways while I was gone, from The Tuckers Take Tennessee and Life as Mom! (Nothing like finding prizes waiting for you after a great time away!)
    3. I was the featured friend on Seeds of Faith for Women last week, so I had a bunch of "@" tweets about me floating around on Twitter. (The gals at Seed of Faith are so sweet - be sure to check them out!!)
    4. I missed #FF on Twitter - I was mentioned in a number of #FF tweets! (Thanks for all the #FF love!!)
    5. I realized that my blog posts weren't feeding to Twitter like they should have been over the weekend, so I had to trouble-shoot that this morning. (It was an issue of FeedBurner changes I'd made.)
    6. I didn't have the post for today written yet, so I'm writing it spur-of-the-moment. (I was going to post about my top 10 favorite online Bible study resources - I'll have to save that topic for a future Top 10 Tuesday post.)
    7. I haven't really started doing any of my school work for this week, so I have a lot of "serious" writing to do for my writing class. (I decided to postpone my class participation til today, as my brain was too tired to crank out quality writing last night.)
    8. My husband is off all week, and we have a LOT of packing to get started, as our anticipated move date is only 3.5 weeks away! (We're scheduled to close on the 30th, if everything stays on track.)
    9. I've got at least three more loads of laundry to get done from this weekend. (Something about camping creates more laundry in 5 days than we create in a week at home! Thankfully, my awesome husband is working on this for me.)
    10. I need to get back into my Maximize Your Mornings routine, getting back into the Word daily and exercising. (Always a transition after being gone.)
What "weekend recovery" do you have facing you this week? Did you get a chance to "unplug" at all this past weekend?

    Why I'm going to school...

If you've been around the blog for long, you probably know that I'm going to school online for my MA in Ministry. What you may not know is the reason behind my decision to go back to school. I thought I'd share a little more with you about why I'm taking online classes...

As a student in the Accelerated Graduate Degree program at Baptist Bible, I am accomplishing three things: I’m finishing my Bachelor’s degree while getting my Master’s degree, I’m challenging my brain while staying home with my kids, and I’m growing in grace while discovering God’s plan for my life.

Though I attended four years of college, I did it backwards. I started at the four year university, where I switched majors after three semesters. I went to Cedarville University thinking that I was going to graduate with a degree in Athletic Training, only for God to use my time there to show me that He had other plans for my life. One week into the second semester of my sophomore year at Cedarville, He called me into full-time ministry, which resulted in a changed major (to Bible and Missions) and a changed focus. This change also brought forth some research on my part to find a “good fit” for a missions agency for after graduation, which led me to New Tribes Mission. What I learned, though, was that it would be better for me to attend New Tribes Bible Institute (closer to home, less costly, and also where my boyfriend was attending) if I wanted to go to the mission field with NTM. So, after my sophomore year at Cedarville, I transferred all my Bible credits to NTBI, and I spent the next two years there earning my Associates Degree. I spent four years in college to earn a two-year degree, even though I had enough credits to qualify for a Bachelor’s Degree – NTBI didn’t offer a BA, just an AA.

I got married to my boyfriend in the middle of my time at NTBI, and our initial goal was to continue the training with NTM after I finished at the Bible school – this would have resulted in BA for both of us. However, God changed our plans, and our formal education came to a halt. We moved to a different state to get involved in a ministry, started a family, moved again “for school” (school fell through), had another baby, and life went on. After our second baby, I was able to make the transition to being a stay-at-home-mom, but it was a struggle for me to be at home full-time, as I thrive on deadlines and checklists. Homemaking and I do not get along. I was looking for a way to keep my brain challenged, while also being able to stay home with my kids. A friend had started taking classes through BBC online, and I decided to look into it for myself. God aligned the details and I enrolled in the Accelerated Degree Completion program mid-way through the spring semester.

Since I had enough credits for BA, I have been able to take all my classes at the MA level (only having to mirror a few back). My first session, I chose to take two classes that “looked very similar” for “ease” in transitioning back into academia. God quickly made it clear to me, though, that He had other uses for those classes in my life. Through a study of the Spiritual Disciplines, I began to see a need for change in my life – I saw a need to put myself in a place where I could grow in grace. My next set of classes reflected my desire to teach (I had recently taken on a teaching role at my church) and fulfilled a requirement for my BA – these classes stretched me again, helping me to see more of the path that God was leading me on. As I prayed about the classes I would take this semester, I knew I wanted to take a writing course, but the others were less clear. I ended up proposing an independent study related to my current blogging ministry, which was accepted, and I found myself once again on a narrower path. Each class I take confirms or narrows for me the path that God is leading me on, and each class has caused me to grow in grace as I am challenged to dig deeper and apply more of God’s Word to my life.

The Accelerated Degree Completion program at Baptist Bible has been an answer to prayer in many areas of my life. It has provided the credibility of a Bachelor’s degree while allowing the opportunity to get a Master’s degree as well. The program has challenged my brain while allowing me to continue to be a stay at home mom. I have been growing in grace while discovering God’s unique plan for my life. I am thankful for the experience and look forward to the rest of my time in this program.

    Company Girl Coffee 9.3

Another week has come and gone. And somehow, we've made it to September already!?! Less than a month til we (hopefully) close on our new house and move!

It's been another busy week in the blog-o-sphere. I've made some "major" changes to the blog (I'm blogging on my own domain now!!) and shared some great conversations and connections with you all.
This weekend, we're enjoying being with J's family at one of our favorite places. I'll be sure to share pictures and memories next Friday with you all!

I hope you all have a blessed Labor Day weekend!

How to Pray for Your Kids

Last week, I talked about how to pray for missionaries, and I decided to turn that one post into a mini-series here: "How to pray for..." So I want to take eight Thursdays to share some thoughts with you about "how to pray for" various people in your life. I won't cover all the bases, but I hope provide you with a springboard for more ideas of "how to pray for" the people in your life!

    ----------------------------------------------------------

Praying for your kids is one of the most important things you can do as a parent. I know this, and yet I struggle at times to know how to pray for them. When they're sick, it's easy to think to pray for their health. When they're disobedient, it's easy to remember to pray for obedient hearts. But when everything is going well, I often find myself forgetting to pray for them!

As a result of my forgetfulness, I have incorporated a prayer calendar (from Kat at Inspired to Action) into my daily devotional time that helps me to know how to pray for my children. Using Scripture to springboard my prayers, I use a calendar that lists the Scripture reference and a sample prayer for each day of the month. This allows me to spend time covering my children in prayer throughout the month, focusing each day on a different aspect of their character.

How do you pray for your children?

Edit: Jen shared a prayer pattern in the comments that she uses to pray for her son, and I wanted to share the link with you: Seven Prayers a Day (from Angie Smith).

Who & Why Wednesday: God is ETERNAL

Who is God? God is ETERNAL: Psalm 102.12; Isaiah 40.28; Psalm 90.1-2

Why do I care? Because God is eternal, my identity in Him is eternal as well (Ephesians 1.3-14): I am defined by my position in Christ. I'm redeemed, forgiven, and sealed. He has justified me, is sanctifying me, and will redeem me - all because of His grace (Romans 5.9)!!
