How to Pray for Your Kids

Last week, I talked about how to pray for missionaries, and I decided to turn that one post into a mini-series here: "How to pray for..." So I want to take eight Thursdays to share some thoughts with you about "how to pray for" various people in your life. I won't cover all the bases, but I hope provide you with a springboard for more ideas of "how to pray for" the people in your life!

----------------------------------------------------------

Praying for your kids is one of the most important things you can do as a parent. I know this, and yet I struggle at times to know how to pray for them. When they're sick, it's easy to think to pray for their health. When they're disobedient, it's easy to remember to pray for obedient hearts. But when everything is going well, I often find myself forgetting to pray for them!

As a result of my forgetfulness, I have incorporated a prayer calendar (from Kat at Inspired to Action) into my daily devotional time that helps me to know how to pray for my children. Using Scripture to springboard my prayers, I use a calendar that lists the Scripture reference and a sample prayer for each day of the month. This allows me to spend time covering my children in prayer throughout the month, focusing each day on a different aspect of their character.

How do you pray for your children?

Edit: Jen shared a prayer pattern in the comments that she uses to pray for her son, and I wanted to share the link with you: Seven Prayers a Day (from Angie Smith).

I try hard to pray for my kids every morning, I have a list of people I try and pray for daily and they are always on my list because I want god to protect them in school and I want them to make the right choices throughout the day. Thanks for this reminder. I hope to get in our your other Thursdays too!

Thanks for the reminder. Even though my son is young-about to turn a year old-it is still just as important for me to continually be in prayer for him. I need to be his biggest advocate.

This post made me realize that I am not always good about praying daily for my little one when things are going well. I always pray with him but not for him. In fact, I don't think I have since Monday! I need to change that! Thank you for the reminder!

Jen,

I think I may have seen something about it awhile back (maybe on your
blog??) but I haven't looked at it too closely. Thanks for sharing it - I'm
definitely going to take a closer look at it!

Thanks for sharing! It is definitely important to start each day in prayer.
I look forward to interacting with you more in the weeks to come!

Definitely! In their younger years, we need to cover them with prayers about
their character development - that's why I love the prayer calendar Kat
shares so much. As they grow older, they have more "tangible" requests that
we can pray over them, yet their character and walk with the Lord should
always be our top requests.

That's one of my struggles too... unless I'm intentional about praying FOR
them, I tend to forget. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Ashley, I love this! Thanks so much for the two prayer for kid links that you gave us. I have "Power of a Praying Parent", but I like having it laid out day by day - what to pray and when!
